Description

This is the second of the 4 runs I made of Mars on September 1st.

This is one of the most interesting faces of Mars and front and centre is the iconic Vallis Marineris. It is pleasing to resolve Candor Chasma so well. It is the grey-black linear feature between Aurore Sinus and Melas Chasma, which is the main part of the canyon system jutting out from Aurora Sinus towards the Tharsis Montes.

Solis Lacus is well placed and there is good detail of this remarkable looking feature, which I have heard some say looks like a space port. There is a very dark round feature on its f edge.

Argyre Planitia is towards the south and rotating towards the terminator whilst Nilokeras is doing the same thing up north although it is very well defined in the image. Further north again there are thick blue-white water vapour clouds around the north polar region. Meanwhile the SPC seems to have slowed its rate of shrinkage and there are two dark intrusions onto it at or near the Central Meridian position.

There seems to be a good deal of tenuous blue-white cloud visible around the terminator in the equatorial regions and further to the north and a somewhat thicker bank of cloud over Aurorae Sinus on the p side of the Vallis Marineris. This is visible in the Blue channel in particular and I have included an image with the various colour channel components as a mouse over. It is pleasing to see how much is coming through in the Green and Blue component images.
