Description

Abell 82
PK 114-4.1

Abell 82 is a faint Planetary Nebula in the Constellation Cassiopeia and is about 1000LY from Earth. It has an Ha bipolar outer ring and O3 interior with an unusual Ha bar across the center. Use the Mouseover feature to view the Ha bar closer up.

PN or not?
One study by Astronomy and Astrophysics speculates that its central star is a Supergiant of spectral
Type KO.
But this kind of star would not be able to excite surrounding nebula to shine in Ha and O3 wavelengths as bright as M57(Ring Nebula), hence its faintness– it requires more UV light. So here is the PN controversy, a K0 type star could not birth a planetary nebula, because when a PN is created, the central star rejects its outer shell and becomes a white dwarf, and the K0 supergiant in Abell 82 still contains these outer parts.

Mysteries of our Cosmos.

Thanks, Eddie
