Description

My second attempt at M3 this year, using short, unguided, 15s exposures, has produced a much better image; I am happy with the colour saturation and overall resolution, although it was a hazy, and at times cloudy, night. 40m data has started to show off the majesty of this ancient cluster.

M3 lies 36,000 LY away in the ‘hunting dogs’, and is one of the brightest globular clusters, with 500,000 stars, and ‘younger’ than many at a mere 8 billion years old!

Data were calibrated, aligned and stacked in ASTAP, Han Klein's excellent free astrometric stacking program, with 30 darks and 30 flats, before processing in Startools using a standard workflow.
