Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of galaxies located 75 million light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius at a declination of -13 degrees.

The edge-on spiral is NGC 6835.  This galaxy spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.  The dust lanes and bright core make me wish that we had a better viewing perspective of this galaxy.

The faint face-on spiral is NGC 6836.  This galaxy spans 1.1 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 25,000 light years.  The structure of this galaxy is fascinating.  The central region is yellow and transitions quickly to a faint blue outer disk.   Numerous star clusters are visible.  I don't think there is an arm structure here, but there does seem to be a faint bright rim on the lower left side of the disk.

I don’t see any interaction between these 2 galaxies, so they are likely to be at least a million light years apart.
