Description

The Cone Nebula (NGC 2264) is an HII region in the Monoceros constellation, located about 2.700 light years from Earth and measures about 7.000 light-years in length.

It is so named because of its shape resembling a cone. The cone comes from a dark nebula (of absorption, composed of molecular hydrogen and dust), located in front of an emission nebula.

Sometimes it is also called the Nebula of Jesus Christ because of its resemblance to Jesus in profile with hands in a position of prayer.
