Description

Short visit to Štefánik's Observatory [1] in Prague on Mar 25, 2009. The double refractor by Zeiss placed in the observatory's main dome (consisting of a photographic refractor with 210mm aperture and a visual refractor with 180mm aperture, both with F=3400mm, for f/16.2 and f/18.9 correspondingly). Shown here from two different angles (two iSO800 1/30sec f/4.5 exposures with handheld camera).

"This instrument was first used by König in Vienna, and was relocated to the Štefánik Observatory in Prague in 1928" [2].

Apparently, this 5.5 ton instrument (the mount and counterweights included) got an off-site (!) overhaul recently by the original manufacturer after more than 100 years in service [3]. The picture from manufacturing of this instrument back to 1908 also resurfaced thanks to Carl Zeiss Archives [4]. The same instrument as it stands in the modern factory is shown in [5]. What an amazing connection through time!

Title: The second main instrument of the observatory: D=370mm F=3300 (f/8.9) Maksutov-Cassegrain

Description: The telescope was installed in the Western Dome in 1976, and its focal length is rather close to that of the double astrograph in the Main Dome (F=3400 mm).
