Description

NGC 4565 - a spiral galaxy that we see edge-on. It's located in Coma Berenices, in a distance of about 55 million light years. It is also classified as a LINER galaxy. Its form is very similar to the Milky Way. The central "pseudo-bulge" is actually a bar that is almost parallel to our line of sight.  IC 3571 is also in the image. Data from radioastronomy and gas spectrometry hint at a close encounter between the two about 300 million years ago.

For now, I call this project finished. It was started at the request of my wife who thought it might be nice to hang an image of this galaxy on the kitchen wall (in 3.5 x 0.8 m...).

Over three years in the making, it contains a lot of experiments. While reviewing it, I was pleased to find my image acquisition skills do seem to have improved in this time. The first year data was... experimental. It's good the Pixinsight pixel rejection algorithms work this well.

I like the "trail" of faint fuzzies to the left of NGC 4565.
