Description

M82, The Cigar Galaxy, is a starburst galaxy approximately 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.

This galaxy has an extremely high energy starburst region at its centre. The starburst core is containing nearly 200 young massive star clusters. The core is producing so much energy and solar winds that a massive amount of ionized hot gas is ejected laterally / perpendicular to the galaxy disk. With the use of a special hydrogen filter, I was able to record some of this ejected gas.

This was also one of my longest projects. It has a total integration time of 27 hours. I recorded this in February 2022 from the middle of our light-polluted city and therefore needed much more exposure time to achieve a good signal-to-noise ratio.
