Description

The Elephants Trunk nebula (IC 1396A) is embedded in a large ionized gas region, called IC 1396, located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light years away from Earth. It dominates the image through its special shape in the upper part. The other eye-catching object is Herschel's Garnet Star on the left margin. The star also known as HD 206936 is a red supergiant and shines in a wonderful deep garnet color.

I took the image in the really hot summer 2019 in the Bavarian Forest. The early rising moon and the not yet really dark summer sky limited the shooting time to the first half of the night. Thus, I collected only 68 individual images in 3 nights. Unfortunately, I lost all my flats and dark flats due to a SSD crash in 2020, so I did the integration using only the bias frames.

Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy it.
