Description

This object is a barred spiral galaxy located 70 million light years away in the southern constellation of Sculptor at a declination of -30 degrees. The galaxy spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view. This corresponds to a diameter of 125,000 light years, which is about the same as our Milky Way. We are viewing the galaxy at about 45 degrees (midway between face-on and edge-on).

The arm structure is fascinating, with multiple arms originating from each end of the bar. Numerous star clusters and Ha regions are apparent in the disk.

The most interesting aspect of this object to me is the core. Dark dust lanes spiral into the center of the core, which is mainly yellow but has a blue region above and right of the center.
