Abell 86

This faint planetary nebula is located in the constellation of Cepheus at a declination of +71 degrees. It spans 1.3 arc-minutes in our apparent view. Since this object has no distance data, I cannot calculate its exact diameter.

The HII signal is much stronger than the OIII signal for this PN. I do not see a clear progenitor star here.

The 86 Abell PN objects are ordered by their right ascension. But interestingly, this object, the last one, has an RA that is less than that of any other object in the Abell PN catalog. Why is that? When this catalog was created by George Abell in 1966, he naturally used the 1950 coordinate system. In that system the RA coordinate of this object was 23 hours 59 minutes. In today’s 2000 coordinate system, its RA has moved up 3 minutes in the sky (as all objects have) to 0 hours 02 minutes. So if Dr. Abell compiled his catalog today, this would be Abell 1.
