Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of galaxies located 215 million light years away in the constellation of Serpens at a declination of +15 degrees.

The magnitude 14.8 spiral galaxy at center is UGC10169. The slightly brighter magnitude 14.7 elliptical galaxy UGC 10164 is below. Each galaxy spans 0.8 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter for each galaxy of 50,000 light years. A faint star stream bridge connects these 2 objects, but the most striking feature is the 200,000 light year long tidal star stream which extends out from the spiral galaxy, away from the elliptical in typical fashion.

This object was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Spiral Galaxies with Elliptical Galaxy Companions on Arms. I think it is a stretch to say that the elliptical galaxy is on the "arm" of the spiral galaxy. Interestingly, Dr. Arp makes no mention of the star streams, nor is the classification based on them.

I like the faint dust band seen in the spiral galaxy.
