Description

My first photo of Mars.

Most of the surface features were unfortunately hidden behind a massive dust storm during the 2018 opposition. The dark Syrtis Major region, bright Hellas basin, and the white ice cap near the South pole are visible in this image from a small refractor, though with reduced contrast behind the storm.

The planet was only 9 degrees above the horizon when I took this photo. I used very fast shutter speeds (R: 1 ms, G: 2 ms, B: 6 ms) in an attempt to freeze the seeing, and the histogram was therefore a bit too low and the individual images probably more noisy than needed. Mars was definitely dancing around in the raw video frames, as you can see on the short animation below (Red filter).
