Description

Here's a little ongoing project.
Last year I was scrolling around in Telescopius  looking for dark nebulae to image. I came across what looked like an interesting clump of Hydrogen. So I collected some Ha at 765mm (in the revisions, monochrome). I was interested to see the radial / spoke type structure and the brighter central ring, surrounding a dark centre.

RA 17 08 12, Dec -38 14 50

Then the cloud came in.

Last week, at 300mm I took the opportunity to collect some more exposure. Sadly only 12 subs per Ha, Oiii and Sii filter at this stage. Image calibration will be far more effective with longer exposure as the nebulosity here is very faint.

First image is HSS mapped - definite Sulphur signal. I'll also include revisions with H(S)OO with and without stars. And SHO.

At the bottom right was something else unexpected: what appears to be an uncatalogued ? emission nebula with a faint Oiii signal included.

I have consulted many catalogues and maps. The image has been platesolved successfully. I can say the bright spot to the upper left is RCW 120. The Open Cluster right of centre is the Moth Wing Cluster NGC 6281. Off-sensor to the lower right is Sh2-2.

So I am publishing now to see if anyone is able to identify this object and / or make some assertions about what (if anything) might be happening here? It looks like gas is being dragged in toward a central point.

I'll spend some more time here this autumn/winter at 300 and 1000mm seeking to improve the image quality and resolve more details. I know the image quality is not good right now.

No, I don't think it's aliens.
