Description

This iconic object has been on my wish list for some time, but for sure it deserves more FL than 800mm. I had to crop this image a lot to achieve an acceptable FOW.

This object is a supernova remnant observed by chinese, japanese, arabic and native american astronomers 1054, when it appeared and was visible for 653 days. It was in 1731, when John Bevis discovered what we know today as Messier 1.

27 years later, Charles Messier hunting for Haleys Comet, knew nothing about Bevis' discovery. He observed a faint blob, believing that this could be the comet. But soon he noticed, that there was no movement against the starry background. It never could be the comet he was looking for. In order to avoid this mistake again, he noted the objects position. It was the first entry in what was to become the famous Messier catalogue.
