Description

The Crescent Nebula, my first narrow band image combination.

The Crescent Nebula is an emission nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. The center star is a super hot Wolf-Rayet star that is shedding a sun mass of material every 10K years in solar winds that is colliding with outer envelope of the star when it became a red giant 400K year ago. The solar winds compress the gas and cause it to emit the colored nebula we can visualized. The nebula is in our own Milky Way about 4.8K light years away. The nebula itself measures an estimated 25 light years across. Eventually the star will go supernova in approximately 1 million years.
