Arp 227

Arp 227 is the central galaxy pair in the image. These rarely imaged galaxies, also known as NGC 470 and NGC 474, are located 100 million light years away in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of +3 degrees. These galaxies are each about 5 arc-minutes in diameter in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 150,000 light years.

Both galaxies have interesting structures. The right galaxy, NGC 474, has tidal streams which suggest that a previous merger with a smaller galaxy may have taken place. The galaxy on the far left is NGC 467. Although it appears smaller than the two central galaxies in our view, it is 2.5 times further away. The actual diameter of this galaxy is huge, at over 200,000 light years.

Both NGC 474 and NGC 467 are shell galaxies, described as galaxies which have concentric rings of star streams. Such galaxies are rare and this may be the only region in the sky where two can be imaged in the same field of view. Several other tiny galaxies are visible throughout the image. I especially like what appears to be a three-armed galaxy at right.
