Description

Comet C/2021 A1 Leonard on 26th Dec 2021 from near Taupo, lNew Zealand, low in the western sky (only 14 deg altitude) at about 10:40 pm. 15 x 10 second exposures with a C11 280mm SCT with Hyperstar f/2 reducer at 560mm focal length and ZWO ASI2600MC Pro camera on a 10Micron GM1000 HPS mount. No filter, no darks, no flats. Captured with a ZWO Asiair Pro capture device. Stacked with Astropixel Processor comet alignment. Processed in Pixinsight and Photoshop Elements. The comet was about 93 million km distant and moving away from us at about 240 thousand km/hr. I was surprised how much detail I could capture in the tail given the low altitude and a nearby LED streetlight shining into the scope.  It was very flukey, a session where things just worked. I didn't have much time, plonked mount/tripod down and just did an eyeball polar align, using a known landmark, didn't align/build a model for the mount at all and somehow when I tried a goto I could see I had fluked the polar align close enough to spot on, that for the short ten sec images the pointing/tracking was good enough to work.
