Description

This galaxy is located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +65 degrees. It spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 70,000 light years. This galaxy is classified as a spiral galaxy but it also looks like an elliptical galaxy. A paper (“The H(I) content of the advanced merger NGC 4441”, by Manthey, Aalto, H¨uttemeister and Oosterloo) documents that this galaxy was formed from a merger between a spiral and an elliptical.

The inner disk region looks like a spiral galaxy, with a bright core and numerous faint dust bands. I like the bluish shading around the core as seen in the full resolution view. The outer region is strange and fascinating – numerous looping star streams protruding in various directions. I am surprised that Dr. Arp didn’t pick this one for his catalog – it is more interesting and bizarre than many of his other “peculiar” Arp objects.
