Description

This object is one of the most interesting in the Arp catalog.  It is located about 170 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +37 degrees.

The large spiral galaxy at center in the foreground is NGC 5395, a 12.5 magnitude Seyfert galaxy.  It spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 140,000 light years.  The arm structure is very strange, appearing to be one heavy arm which extends almost 720 degrees around the core.  A parallel set of dark dust lanes stands out on the right side of the disk.

The smaller grand design magnitude 13.1 spiral galaxy above, NGC 5394, is a bit further away and is 110,000 light years in diameter.  For both of these galaxies, I like the color contrast between the outer reaches of the galaxy arms (blue) and the core / inner regions (yellow).

Studies have concluded that these galaxies are interacting.  It is surprising to me that the larger disk appears much more disturbed than the smaller one.  Perhaps the larger galaxy is the result of a past merger with a now absorbed companion.

The small galaxy to the upper right is LEDA 2101092, which is 80,000 light years in diameter but is much further away at 0.7 billion light years.  Just below and right of this object is the tiny galaxy SDSS J135821.31+372554.1, which is 70,000 light years in diameter and 2 billion light years away.
