Description

Another wild galaxy image from Hubble. A cosmic cartoon.

From Wikipedia..."Arp 148 is the staggering aftermath of an encounter between two galaxies, resulting in a ring-shaped galaxy and a long-tailed companion. The collision between the two parent galaxies produced a shockwave effect that first drew matter into the center and then caused it to propagate outwards in a ring. The elongated companion perpendicular to the ring suggests that Arp 148 is a unique snapshot of an ongoing collision. Infrared observations reveal a strong obscuration region that appears as a dark dust lane across the nucleus in optical light. Arp 148 is nicknamed Mayall s object and is located in the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear, approximately 500 million light-years away. This interacting pair of galaxies is included in Arp's catalog of peculiar galaxies as number 148..."

I see this has been processed by a few people. I post this image as a pretty decent example of what this data can yield. Its hard for me to improve much beyond this result without compromising certain aspects of the image that I am unwilling to compromise. The image on Wikipedia is 10.3 hours--but they used the U channel, which I did not use. Not sure what the U is--maybe Ha? It,s too bad the sensor is irregular and the imagers don't really concern themselves to much with framing-at least that is how it seems. That is why crops are necessary. A little less of a crop of one would be better. Either that, or a few more subs per channel would be nice. This data set only has 1 sub per channel. I was astonished to see this captured by a couple of amateurs. Even at 2,800 mm it would be small in the FOV. I would love to try and image it, but there are better targets that will carry a much higher potential for success. Maybe ....
