Description

Hi folks,

This month is going to be pretty busy in AP ;-) I spent many hours under the stars with some astro-friends on last Saturday, still keeping social distancing but so happy to share such a lovely night with other crazy stargazers :-) This time, I wanted to shot a new target in constellation Auriga : the Flaming Star Nebula. Setting up all gear at 8pm and be ready 30' later, the sky turned quickly bad due to high clouds layers rolling over Jura Mountains...patience is the main quality requested to do astrophotography! Fortunately, the sky cleared soon after and I could start the imaging session...until new clouds rolled over again...well, this part of Auriga stayed a bit apart from that second wave and I could reach almost 4 hrs of integration. Back in front of my computer, I've had to reject 1h of data due to bad transparency I didn't really notice while shooting...

The main DSO, IC405 on the right, is lighted up by a variable star, AE Aur, which is actually a "vagabond" escaping from Orion's Belt after close encounter with another star some 2.7 mio l-y ago (no social distancing at this time...). "Flaming Star" is named to illustrate that AE Aur lights up the surrounding gas like a candle. The two other IC objects, IC410 and IC417, are well interesting too, as both have rich hydrogen regions and open clusters in the center, NGC 1893 and NGC1931 respectively.

This version is also a mix of 20% starless image added to the RGB one, to increase details in nebula.

A nice and colorful area in Auriga for sure ;-)

Thanks for looking and stay well guys!

Christophe
