The Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635, Sh2-162, or Caldwell 11) was discovered by William Herschel in 1787. It is an H II region emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. NGC 7635 is roughly 7 light years across and is located between 7,000 and 11,000 light years from Earth.
The "bubble" is created by the stellar wind from a massive, hot, Wolf-Rayet central star, SAO 20575 (BD+60°2522). The central star has a magnitude of 8.71 and a mass about 44 times that of the Sun. The nebula is near a giant molecular cloud, which contains the expansion of the bubble nebula while itself being excited by the hot central star, causing it to glow as well.
The image was created from narrowband data (SII, Ha, and OIII emission lines) and presented in the Hubble palette. Star color was replaced with RGB data.
