Description

NGC 2174 is a star-forming region around 6,400 light years away in the constellation of Orion. Radiation from the newly formed stars in the centre of the nebula excite surrounding gases, giving rise to an emission nebula in which some observers see the head of a monkey (looking left).

The object in the lower left of the frame is Sharpless 2-247 - another emission nebula located around 7,000 light years away. Sh 2-247 falls within the boundaries of Gemini.

NGC 2174 was photographed between 1 January and 21 February 2020 from a remote imaging rig that is jointly owned and operated by Barry Wilson and me.
