Description

This poster is a compilation of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies (BCDs).

Despite some recent efforts, the criteria for identifying a BCD have not yet been widely established.  In general, BCDs have the following characteristics:
1.  Small (generally from 5000 to 15000 light years in diameter
2.  Star-forming (generally blue in color)
3.  No spiral disk structure
4.  Bright blue and diffuse core
5.  Contain little dust and no dust bands
6.  Located close to us (they are faint and hard to identify at a distance)

I have not included a few more popular objects like IC10 which are questionable in their BCD status.

Gas (hydrogen plus helium) contributes to the majority of the mass of BCDs.  Many scientists believe that these small, active galaxies serve as the building blocks for larger galaxy formation.

If you would like to read more about any of these objects, each of the objects in the poster has previously been uploaded and described individually on Astrobin. They all reside in my Astrobin Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) Galaxy Collection.
