Description

NGC 3718 is a twisted, S shape galaxy lying 52 mLY away in Ursa major, a likely result of gravitational interaction with the spiral NGC 3729 at upper left in my image. Contrast this with the quintuplet of small galaxies making up Hickson 56, which lies 400 mLY away.

I’ve attempted NGC 3718 previously in luminance using my mono DSI III pro camera. Whilst the colour in my 183C is dynamic, showing off the  star clouds in these galaxies, I was surprised not to get more of the outer star streams that wrap around NGC 3718. looking at others’ images, larger aperture and much longer 10m exposures are needed.

I decided to image at f6.3 and bin 2 to maximise SNR - 180s exposures are combined with 300s frames and calibrated with darks and flats, to produce a smoother image. Data were processed in Startools using a standard workflow, with additional noise reduction to pull the galaxies forward and colour saturation to expose the blue star clouds.

Title: 300s subs 190m integration

Description: I've used the 300s subs (190m integration) to try and tease out a bit more detail and produce a more 'natural', less saturated image - I'm interested in what you think.

Title: Combined with 19 x 120s 38m Luminance DSI III Pro CCD

Description: Another attempt to combine some data from my mono CCD camera with my OSC CMOS camera. Field rotation was significant requiring me to crop away much of the data - perhaps a little more of the star streams surrounding this twisted spiral, but no dramatic change.
