Description

NGC2359 / Thor's Helmet my first completed image of 2021 with the clouds of La-Nina wreaking havoc with our skies!

11.96 thousand light years away and 30 light years in size. It is produced from a rare type of star, a Wolf Rayet type that is shedding energy at a great rate energizing the gases which are shock waves. WR7 is around 280,000 times brighter than our Sun!

The unique shape is thought to have formed by the interaction of a nearby molecular cloud. Otherwise, it would be more circular and similar to the Bubble Nebula.

Exposure time totaled 6 hours of 3-minute exposures. 3 hours Ha and 3 hours Oiii which were combined to create the colour image. The luminance channel was then extracted and processed to recover detail and sharpened.

Gear used: - HEQ5 Pro mount, ASI1600MM Pro, Antlia 3,5Nm Ha & Oiii filters, guided with a 50mm refractor. Image acquisition was done with SGP and PHD2 for guiding.

All post processing done in Pixinsight latest version.
