Hi Salvatore,
I'haven't finished to check my profile entirely ( i'm the one who wanted you to have a backup of my profile, just before Christmas, funny insn't it ? ) but i think, just because you have the same first name of my father, 3 months for free were enough ….!

Ok, don't worry, I have all my images e I can re-upload it a little bit a the time.
Thank you in advance for rebuilding! Not for me, but because having this huge repository of images and data is of great benefit to the whole community.

No Need for a compensation for me. First, I did not lose any (final) Image, guess I was lucky.
Second, Astrobin is a community thing for me, to share my Images, to obtain constructive critisism and to provide my 2 Cents and help now that I have been in astrophotography for several years. Finally I am archiving all my raw data and final images on my own RAID NAS plus I have two backups, physically outside my home.
Keep on going and all the best from Vienna, Austria.  smile

I've been a member for almost 8 years and I have not been active for the last almost 8 years. For personal reasons I had to give up the hobby and, unfortunately, I still haven't been able to pick it up again.
Still, I have never forgotten about this site and I have always appreciated all the effort you put into it. I think having a community driven gallery such as this is really good for the hobbyists.

I was sad when I read what had happened, because it must have been a very hard lesson for you. Reading so many positive posts and people saying they don't want compensation is heartwarming though!
I think you handled it really well and I think this website is the better for it. If/when I ever pick up the hobby again, I will gladly come back and share my photos as a premium (paid for) member.

It's $36 annually,  I'm hardly worried about it.  You can forego compensating me also.
I did however get all my images back into my profile but don't see a way to get the "oops" banner removed.

Check your staging area, there must be more there!

Hi Salvatore,
i love astrobin and have till now used only the free option to upload images. I feel humbled and greatful for receiving this gracious offer! I will gladly get a premium subscription after that year.
what I wanted to add is, despite the data loss, I really appreciate the way you handled it openly and by taking responsibility. You have shown yourself to be a man of integrity. I do hope and pray that you won‘t be too discouraged upon some of the negative backlash as the vast majority of this community  will continue to stand behind the cause of astrobin! I appreciate you and your work! Much strength and joy for the future

Salvatore,
You have created one of the most amazing websites, truely worthy of and illuminating one of the most amazing endeavors, AP.

Thank you for what you have done and for your kind Premium subscription offer, which I can't possibly accept given the near zero impact this event had on me.  I am returning to AP after a 38 year "intermission" (my bin of images tells that story), and have been planning to switch to paid subscription once I reached beyond 6 images. I will make payment on Premium today.

God bless you and please continue to grow this amazing website.

Hi Salvatore,

First, thank you for Astrobin, and for the community created with.
I've learned so much for the 3 or 4 years I'm here, and met (kind of smile ) and talked with many interesting people.
I just hope that it will continue !

Data loss, ok, that happens, and it can be an issue for some.
But hey, that's DIGITAL AGE, and it's a risk with any data storage service.
The first rule is to make our own data backup!
And to spend some time to upload again our pictures here.

Compensation? As a premium member, I don't want any.
Just an idea, what you could do is to ask users how Astrobin can be improved, maybe via a form or a choice list.
For example, I know that's it would be such a work, but I really like the idea to have a sky map tool to display the pictures (a personal map, and research map)  smile

Anyway, I wish you the best for the incoming work.

Clear sky.

David.

Hi Salvatore, I do not want a compensation.
I could rebuild all thumbnails and no image was lost.

You created and developed AstroBin over time to such a good tool,  you can really be proud of it.

I made a complete backup of my images and took SCREENSHOTS of all my image descriptions,
because AstroBin is my one and only documentation about how I made the images.

As you mentioned a couple of days ago ,  you might provide a backup/download tool in the future.
Please include the Technical page descriptions.

Then I was looking for fits files of a specific image which I did  5 years ago on all my PC's and to my complete astonishment
I found a complete backup of my AstroBin account from 2 years ago on my old Laptop.
Some precognition ?  smile

cheers

I lost 57 of 58 images. Not sure how many I will bring back. Imaging season is just starting, so I may just start over. All I can say, on behalf of those who have made mistakes in the past, present and future, is welcome to the club! The only thing that would be worse to have happen is to be kicked off Astrobin. Thanks for all your efforts Salvatore!

Not "might"… I will provide it, and with high priority. I will include all data. Expect this within a couple of weeks smile

I didn‘t need to be compensated with a premium membership. It only took me 5 minutes to renew my gallery. I actually wanted to pay you for that instead, despite what happend. But I greatly appreciate it! Thank you very much! You are a truly great person! smile

Salvatore,
There doesn't seem to be a way to make payment on the Premium subscription, since you have granted 1 year free.
I also don't see a Donate link.  Please let me know how to make payment to you for the Premium subscription.

Cheers

Hi Trace, well that was a gift because I need to own my mistake (I have written so many apologies, and words are wind).

However, for anybody who wishes to help out AstroBin's PayPal is paypal@astrobin.com. But there are no obligations!

Thank you for even thinking about this smile

I promised I was going to offer compensation for the data loss, which caused many of you to waste a lot of time in fixing your galleries, and for which I am devastatingly sorry. Even more so because it was a stupid human error on my side.Anyway, since this moment, everybody who:

  • had an account already before "the incident"
  • had at least 1 image in their gallery
  • did not already have an active Premium membership
has just received AstroBin Premium for 1 year.

Please remember: if at the end of the year you choose not to renew, your images will not be deleted, held hostage, crippled, hidden, or anything (this is a piece of core philosophy for me)

For people who were already on Premium, I need a little bit more time to offer compensation, I hope you understand.

To everyone else, enjoy your new Premium for a whole year and feel free to upload your whole backlog of past images!

Salvatore
.
You are spoiling the already spoiled.  You might want to consider to not gift that to those that are willing to say “it’s okay”.  Like leave the option or something.  As you do provide a great service at a great cost.  Lots of complainers and anal retentiveness in the hobby and I’d hate to feel like an entitled schmuck complaining about my silly space photos being lost.  Such a “first world” dilemma. I got food on the table and roof over my head.  There are Much greater things to worry about.

Grazie, Aurelio55

Hi Salvatore,

I have stated this before but just  to reiterate…I DO NOT WANT ANY COMPENSATION!!!!!

This site is a valuable asset to the astro imaging community and for $3.00 a month…I can't believe  any body is asking for compensation but  to each their own as the saying goes!

Thanks for what you provide here

Bob smile
