Judges' comments on IOTD

I would really like to read some comments from the IOTD Judges about the selected image, i think i would learn a lot from them…… why it has been chosen? opinions and maybe improvements…

Bye and thanks so much

I second to this.  The only potential issue is that this may increase the work load of judges.

Shouldn't take long to say something like - "Great composition, unusual subject very well handled, perfect round stars and lovely use of colour palatte" .

Cheers

I thought so too.  However, aren't round stars, balanced/vivid color, good composition the basic requirement of an image that qualified for IOTD?  It's indeed easy to make comments like this, but it becomes meaningless if every IOTD receives similar comments.  On the other hand, trying to give every IOTD unique comments and doing it for a year?  Most people can get tired very soon, perhaps not in a year, but in a month or so.

I think we can start with optional judge comments, and see how it goes.

LOL, I was asked to judge a prestigious camera club competition last week and I had to comment on "EVERY" image - using the poo sandwich principle. ie; Say something nice, say what you really want to say, then finish on a positive.
It was challenging to say the least!
I'm sure we can use this opportunity to educate folks as to what Judges see as being IOTD worthy, and know what look for in their own imagemaking smile

I agree with Andy, judging within internal club photography competitions involves critique on every image under most situations. Best kept reasonably brief and concise as to the mostly goods and possible improvements that can be made.

Also, round stars are vivid stars haven’t always been a preresquite for the IOTD smile

After a new pool of judges will be selected, I will poll them to see if they want to do this. It's quite some work to write something every day and I'm afraid that it will discourage judges from choosing images.

THIS. Better leave the judges doing their work. Social pressure is not good.
Changing judges is more important than letting them explain why they picked a certain image.

I disagree -IMO  Judges are in a position to be seen as respected educators for the AP community, therefore they can be seen to be accountable and generous by contributing a few well placed comments.
If they cannot find the time or motivation / not be prepared to do that  - than maybe they should reconsider and serve in a different role.
Changing judges for the sake of change serves little purpose, otherwise why change them at all?

Now that we have a new team of Judges, how do we as (as the new judges) feel about adding comments to our selections for IOTD?

I'm happy to add comments, actually think it is a good idea. Follows the judging that gets done in the photography club circuit already smile

I am no longer a judge, so take my opinion as a grain of salt.  I think this can be done initially as optional, and see how it works, for reasons I mentioned above.

As three of us have now indicated their support for this initiative - can we please have this feature installed?
I guess it could be optional if anyone feels strongly against it, but no one has said that they are.
I strongly believe that the community would benefit enormously from what the judges have to say about selected IOTD's. smile

Hi,
I agree. It would be interesting to read their comment as it could inspire us or just understand why that particular image was choosen. And as Andy said the comment could be short. smile

Davy

Sure, I'll prioritize it, should be able to add it in January.
