I agree

My index went from 4.4 to zero

Hi, I don't really understand the index in spite of reading numerous posts.   Should it go to zero or should it be stable?   I can't believe I have to constantly upload photos to keep my index above zero… there aren't enough clear nights in Vermont for that to ever happen.   So I guess I am entirely confused as to what's happening.  So now I can no longer like images, or I guess do much of anything except wait for clear weather ???

Can someone please fill me in as to whether this is a real issue or expected performance?

Your index is expected to fluctuate a bit but not go from 4.4 to 0 suddenly. Sounds like an issue and I will look into it.

BTW, the same exact thing has been happening to me since I joined.  I just assumed it was a ratio of uploaded images to likes the system allowed us to perform.  But it surely doesn’t slowly go down, it just drops to zero without me knowing how many likes I can or cannot give.  Thanks Salvatore for investigating!

I can't understand why we should be limited to likes or comments of other peoples photos?   Is this a limitation?    I'm still trying to understand if this is a facility I'll join, but it seems like it has some strange rules.

Terri, my issue here is just with one small part of Astrobin.  Aside from this one Index weirdness, Salvatore has been doing a great job keep Astrobin humming along for our social astrophotographic tendencies.  It really is a great site!

Thanks Ara, I agree, seems a great concept and many times when searching for how an image should appear, I find the best images on Astrobin.    Now I'm going to be concerned about liking someone else's image unless I get a more exact understanding of this index.

The index is there to prevent cheating. Back when it wasn’t in place, some people would create fake accounts to like their own images…

Salvatore, Thank you for the explanation.    I guess there's some unfortunate human nature going on.    So can I ask what the formula is so I have some idea of what I can and can't do?   Does it make sense for your index go to zero like mine did?

The formula is quite complicated, but basically more likes and more images yield a greater index. Index can fluctuate because sometimes people retract likes or delete their account and their likes are lost, but if it goes suddenly to zero it’s probably a bug. I can check, but if you save one of your images again that should trigger a recalculation.

Thank you Salvatore.   My index has changed, must have been some kind of bug.

Thanks,
