One of the notification settings is worded as "Your image was favorited"; is a favorite a like?

Hi Salvatore - can we get a send to forum from an image.  Can add via forum but can't see option when on an image.  Only a minor thing but seems logical.Cheers
Paddy

Sure, good idea! Straight to my list  smile

That's the old name for bookmarks, I need to remove that setting, thanks!

Okay, makes sense!

Also, I've been meaning to bring up for a long time that double quotes don't show up correctly in emails.

New update!

Now you can specify advanced setting for the plate-solving process, allowing you to give hints to the engine. Hints include a minimum and maximum field size, and a RA/dec position (with a radius for precision) for your image.

The Actions menu was getting too crowded, so I spun off  a few things to a new Edit menu.

This was Phase 1. Phase 2 will see a higher success rate for submissions, and Phase 3 will see a bit more details about the plate-solving job on the image page.

Let me know if you find any problems!

New update!

Phase 2 or the Plate-solving improvements is now complete! You get:

  1. Images are now more likely to solve blindly, because AstroBin now submits larger images to Astrometry.net
  2. AstroBin now generates its own annotations overlay, instead of relying on the green one by Astrometry.net
  3. The HD catalog stars are not included anymore in the annotations: they weren't really useful, I think, and just crowded the overlay
Here's a nice before/after picture for you!

AFTER

PLEASE NOTE:
this only works on new images

Minor update.

There's now a nicer looking placeholder for images that are still loading, and the stories on the front page get a thumbnail that's the correct size, so they'll be faster to download.

The new plate solving overlay looks fantastic. However I am finding that some of the overlays don't align correctly with the image. An example can be found here: http://www.astrobin.com/267930 However when I submit the image directly to Astrometry.net it comes back perfect so there must be something going wrong with the overlay mechanism.

Thanks for the report, I'll look into it!

Salvatore:
Image scale is no longer shown with plate solving results?  Am I missing something?  I thought that was a useful number to display.

Thanks,
Jason

It's back but only for new plate-solve jobs. So if you want it where it's missing, you need to start a new plate-solving job via the Edit menu.

Hi, very small update but noteworthy.

Images now get a field to save when they were first published (i.e. either uploaded directly as public images, or when they were first promoted from the staging area to the public area.)

This way, if you keep an image in the staging area for a long time to continue editing it, and then you make it public, it will still be eligible for IOTD submission and not out the window.

Hope this helps!

Some updates:

  • You can now assign a description to each image revision. Very useful to explain what's behind each revision.
  • The public data pools are now sorted by the date they were created. It used to be "last updated" but they were updated for all sort of reasons, including downloads, so that was not helpful.
  • The "Gain" property in the advanced acquisition details is now displayed in the technical card.
  • The "Top picks" page now has correct sorting so it's more dynamic.

Another update today:

The Leaderboard is now renamed to Trending astrophotographers and it features filtering by "Last 6 months", "Last year" (default), and "All time".

Unfortunately this change means that that page will be unavailable for up to 24 hours… sorry about this, it was unavoidable.

Please note: due to an issue, the search index is offline, and it takes about 12 hours to rebuild it. Affected areas include the Search, the Trending astrophotographers, the AstroBin indexes. Sorry about the inconvenience!

The Astrobin index (for me at least) is different on the top right ( 68.08 ) and trending page for the last 6 months ( 56.19 ).

The index at the top-right next to your name is your all-time index.
