Upcoming changes to AstroBin Premium subscription model

I have been requested multiple times that AstroBin Premium be paid manually each year, instead of an auto-renewing subscription model, so I will change this in the next week or two (it's ready but it's a bit complex to test).

Because I'm making changes there, I think this is a good opportunity to ask if any of you has some particular requests or wishes for AstroBin's subscription model. I'm all ears if you have ideas, so please let me know!

PS: at this time there will not be any price increases :-)

We will receive notices when it's time to renew, I hope?  And thank you for providing this wonderful service to our quirky community.  Happy Holidays to all.

Yes I will add an email one week before expiration. It bears repeating tho that nothing happens to an expired account, except that you can’t upload new images until you renew. So if you have an expired account you will realize it at the latest when you want to upload a new image, at which point you can renew.

Sounds very reasonable.

Subscription for 3 or 5 years with a slight discount?

I would be happier with the proposed new system.  I prefer to make payments personally rather than it being taken automatically.

My subscription has just expired so I have just now renewed it for another year.
The auto renew subscription is still active though in PayPal.

Edit…………..
I have noticed that my new subscription expiry date is incorrect, should it be 11/01/2019 and not 11/01/2018?

Hi Mark,
the new non-autorenewing subscriptions will be enabled around the first week of January.

And yes, there is a bug in the auto-renewing extension, so I will fix your subscription manually now, sorry!

Can users specify to have it auto-renewed by any chance?

I prefer to move away from the auto-renew thing altogether. The issue is that it ties me in with PayPal, and if I one day I want to move away from it, I won't be able to because of all the subscribers with the auto-renew membership. This is already an issue because I just moved to a different country, and technically I'm required to close my old PayPal and open a new one, but subscribers cannot be migrated…

Very good choice for all of the reasons here, and bravo for taking leadership on this smile.  So many of us are fed up with auto renewal shark schemes that have become common practice under trending anti-consumer laws, and will no longer partake.  I will soon upgrade my subscription to the next level, after a pending move to another country and resetting of accounts.  I look forward to expanding my horizons (literally) to more southerly skies, from the non-light polluted deserts of the UAE.  Time for a cooled camera, you think?

Yes, I agree it is an issue.  I do not see how you consider it just a technicality.  PayPal is all about protecting the consumer and things should not be dismissed as technicalities.

Anyone thinking Paypal, EBay, Bonanza and such protect buyers and sellers has not enjoyed the complete experience.  It's all about protecting their extortion fees taken from the value of your goods and efforts.  Read their policies carefully instead of auto clicking the "I agree" box.  A multi-billion dollar non-regulated Internet "insurance" loophole with no laws, regulators, or adjusters.

Want an AR6 with a busted lens broken by a buyer that got a joint EBay / Paypal refund from 21 day frozen funds when it fell off his 10 pound mount?  A legal affidavit documented with videos and photos carried no legal jurisdiction.  Reversal of consumer protection laws and undefined / non-existent Internet law now sanction these practices, after hard-fought victories 50 years ago to stop it / break up monopolistic markets.  Calculated, useless, one-way "communication" with "hide-behind" automatic answering machines, along with bank practices disallowing blocking of dispersing your own funds —- even pending ones —– leave automatic billing to fools who are convinced by marketeers of reducing the value of their goods and services by several percent as being unquestionable, standard practice and necessity. Especially easy prey for older generations.

I repeat plaudits for the Astrobin manager(s) on their billing decisions: good honest business gets respect, results, loyalty, and member recruitment. Astronomers by definition tend to be quality people on a non-paid, volunteer mission, with a work ethic even sacrificing sleep, sharing and pooling their knowledge in the name of seeking truth, having no time for schemers, aliens in hangars, hoax's, junk science, and other such nonsense.  smile

I presume the new arrangements are not yet in place, as PayPal took my annual subscription today.
My expiration date is 1/3/2019 according to my Gallery page, so a bit confused.

Well maybe that is 3rd January in American format, (I was thinkg 1st March) but even so I am still confused about it saying 2019 on my Gallery Page.

I plan to cancel the auto-subscription for next year and do it via the new system that you have planned Salvatore.

Hi Carole, yes, not yet in place. It’s really busy at work as I have a new day job. I’ll see if I can put it live during the weekend.

OK, fine for this year, but I prefer to pay it personally next year.
Thinking about it, it's probably updated the date today to 2019, because the payment was taken today.

Oh dear doing a new job and coping with all of us lot!!!

Salvatore,
we can't judge your work high enough. I thought you were doing this as your main job! Astrobin is a very popular community worldwide. If it's someday not possible for you to continue the support and run it for any reason, we all look old. Have you ever thought about a bigger team?

regards

Hi Jens,
there's no point in hiding that working on AstroBin full time would be my dream! Unfortunately at this time it doesn't make enough money for me to take the risk, considering that I have a young family to support. Obviously it would be a win-win situation for everybody, if I could go from working on AstroBin 4 hours a week to 40! But alas… for now it's just a dream.

I can imagine that. But it would change nothing in the situation that Astrobin is depending in only one person.
You could turn out for some reason (what god may forbid), and there's no one who can carry on with this.
Wouldn't it be a good idea to medium-term involve one or the other developer in the project on a voluntary basis, so that someone else gets to know about it?

That's a bit difficult. AstroBin is pretty much a for-profit project, and nobody wants to work for free. Bear in mind that AstroBin is open source and should something happen to me, somebody can pick it up. My wife has all the passwords also in case I die and she can sell the business part so that the current database is not lost.
