I just picked up a Daystar Quark Chromosphere to use with my Orion ED80, ST80, and 50mm scope. I have had some good luck so far with the ED80 and capturing prominences but I was trying to use the 50mm to get some full disk shots today and noticed some problems. I think one of my problems might come down to the imaging plane not being exactly perpendicular so I may need a tilt device. I did have some problems with Newton's Rings but once I put an ADC on that I had for planetary, they seemed to disappear. First up, I noticed that one side of the Sun is always brighter than the other and I have noticed this in all three scopes. Here is a screenshot of my live view and is purposely overexposed to exaggerate the difference and make it easier to see what I'm talking about. I have noticed that if I adjust the ADC, this area moves around a little but I can never get it to go away no matter how much I adjust the ADC.

The next is almost like a band that is out of slightly out of focus but more prevalent in the upper left area. I'm adding three different photos with the Sun in different positions in the FOV to show how the band seems to be placed.

I haven't done full disk imaging (as i have way too much focal length) but you could try and stop down the f ration by using an aperture stop at the front of the objective (cut out a cardboard circle to make less light go thru) - perhaps try 70mm.

Hi Thomas,

I'm not sure if it's due to the ADC or not, but your Quark doesn't seem to be on-band. I'm seeing mostly photospheric detail and very little chromospheric detail. It would be great to see some full disc images without the ADC. Are you sure the Quark is set for the proper temperature? Are you allowing enough time for it to warm up completely? Is it very cold or very hot where you are imaging?

I've had good luck so far with my Quark.  I use it with a WO GT71 with no tubes or anything else.  I use a ASI174MM camera.

Full frame is not possible.  I do have a 0.5 focal reducer I have not yet tried and will see how it goes on the next clear day.

I'm not sure many guide scopes have the quality you would want for a good sun prom shot.  Mine is a 30mm ZWO unit.
