Hi all,

For you sun pic posters out there. Do you suggest a dedicated solar telescope or use a solar filter for your existing scopes? Starting to think taking pics of the sun after seeing so many wonderful pics here. Impressive and inspirational.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,

it depends on the telescope aperture you want to use. The well know dedicated solar scopes end at approx. 10 to 12 cm aperture. Bigger makes no sense, because it gets too expensive (and therefore none is available). If you want to go beyond approx aperture of 13cm you have to use these solar filter. That is the only option available. At this size it is the break even point in costs. There are some more technical restrictions of the technology used for dedicated scopes which limit the maximum diameter.
