This week the Fine Art Astrophotography group reached a new milestone of 1,000 images in the FAA gallery. To commemorate this accomplishment we are hosting a presentation by one of the pioneers of fine art astrophotography, J-P Metsavainio. This event is open to everyone.

Most amateur astrophotographers know J-P’s work and use some of the processing techniques that he invented. If you incorporate Tone Mapping in your processing, then you are relying on an innovation of J-P Metsavainio. For more than a decade, his focus has been the combining of art and science in astrophotography. The imagery that has come from his effort is recognized worldwide as groundbreaking for its beauty and dramatic impact, and has been published by National Geographic, Smithsonian, NASA, Sky & Telescope, and many more.

The title of J-P's presentation is, Astrophotography as a Art Form, his views on art and science, and the processing approaches he uses. The presentation will begin at 7:00p (GMT +2), on July 3, 2021. Since we anticipate a worldwide audience for this presentation, the time of the event was chosen to accommodate the largest number of AstroBin users. The time of the presentation by city/time zone are listed below.

Los Angeles / San Francisco              9:00a
Chicago / Dallas / Mexico City        11:00a

Beijing / Shanghai / Perth                1:00a (July 4th)

This is awesome! JP's work has been a huge inspiration. Everyone should get the book he made with Brian May and David Eichner 'cosmic clouds in 3d'! Is this event open to all? Can I invite friends to register or would you rather keep it open only to people in this group?

It is absolutely open to everyone, Nico. Please invite everyone that would like to hear J-P's views on art and learn about his processing approaches. I will secure a Zoom room largest enough for everyone.

Much as i love and am inspired by  J-P's work, the 3am call time for us here in Melbourne, Australia sadly prevents me attending the live presentation.
Say Hi for me anyway!
Cheers

Takk, Sigga. I suspect there are other times that are not correct. I calculated the times manually using my TI calculator, circa 1981.

I think not very likely time in Reykjavik going to have huge effects :-)

Thank you so much for hosting this venue, Gary! Not only was it intriguing to listen to J-P and become more aware about his stunning work, but it also was highly enjoyable to see and hear you and some of the other dear astro mates live (for the first time)! Physical distance doesn't matter so much these days. You have a nice weekend and see you soon - Thilo

Thank you, Thilo. It was pleasure to finally see the faces and hear the voices of our AstroBin colleagues. I felt they were friends, so meeting face-to-face for the first time was wonderful. I also learned new things. I did not know (or would have guessed), for example, that Gary Imm is 6' 5" tall! No wonder he has no problem reassembling his heavy equipment every night. And thank J-P for an excellent presentation.

Thanks again Gary! It was wonderful to hear from J-P and others.

For anyone in the US, it seems the MIT Press version of JP's wonderful book is still in print. I see it for sale on Amazon and elsewhere: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0262044021/
