Today J-P Metsavainio presented, Astrophotography as an Art Form, via Zoom to an audience that circled the globe. He shared his remarkable imagery, and he discussed new data acquisition techniques that turn "5 hours of acquisition into the equivalent of 200 hours of data." Here is the link for the 90 minute presentation and discussion.

Very beautiful images, but the capture times involved are not practical for many of us. Woe is we!

Are there any references to his nesting technique that expand the apparent exposure time? (I did not get the impression that most of the images he showed exploited that method, as many date back a decade or more and he's just refining that technique now. At least that's what I heard.)

Yes, that's what I understood too, Alex. The multiple binning acquisition technique is a new approach he has employed only recently. Most of the data he acquired in the last 10 years was taken in the old-fashioned way. BTW, good to meet you face-to-face.

Gary,

A big thank you for organising this. A great idea. I could have stayed 2 hours more. Nice to meet you and astrophotographers from astrobin face to face. Almost like a virtual astrobin café : ).

Thanks so much for getting that truely inspirational presentation for us...

I want to read the fine print on his acquisition technique and run it by the folks in the Astronomy Department here... but I can see where he is going.  Very tricky stuff... but he knows a LOT.

I have to say it made me go out an process and image that has been a thorn in my side for a while... well if he does his stuff in a city I have no excuses.  Give you both credit for getting me off my butt and work on this one....

Hey Gary,

Thanks for organizing & posting this - would love to have seen this live but very happy to to have enjoyed it in the replay.

Binx8 eh? Cool!

Might be just the solution for getting an O3 or S2 signal on a few low S/N targets here in the sthn hemisphere.

Hmmmm - must give this a go!

Cheers

I agree, Andy. I'm going to give 8X binning a go with my next project. It is certainly working for J-P.

Guys, has he put up exactly what he does?  I know he recommends as do others to go 2x or 3x for the color toning and then to get the L from I assume 1X.  Not sure how you get this all at once.

I am sorry to not have met you face-to-face, Mike. Connecting in real time with our AB colleagues was one of the best parts of the event. We'll do it again. Hope that you are well.

I'll pass on the request for the exact protocol to J-P and post the procedure here. Thanks, Jerry.

Hmmm - seems I can only set my QSI 6162 (via Stellarmate) to bin 1x1, 2x2 or 4x4  - not 8x8 or more... anyone else tried this and found a workaround?
Cheers

Andy
