If anyone has any secrets as to how to process in Gimp, put them here! I'll start: G'MIC is a great add on for Gimp. Iaian's noise reduction and Iaian's fast noise reduction are great. |

The background desaturation portion of this video was very helpful to me. As was the portion about removing dust. The Gimp part starts around 17:45. The beginning is Siril, which is very helpful if you are using that software. Siril and Gimp |

Gimp gets a bad rap for processing and I makes me miffed that people say to get rid of it. GMic’s Iain’s noise reduction 2019 is a great tool in Gimp, along with the wavelets option. Another plug-in I find very useful is the PyAstro with its “smart sharpen” function! https://stargazy.weebly.com/pyastro-for-gimp.html Star reduction that is a great tool using the Pick by color tool/Grow/Feather/Filter/Value Propagate. You just have to get familiar with the process and technique. Dale |

Dale Penkala: Totally agree with you Dale. The star reduction works really well in GIMP. Will give PyAstro a try. Thanks for the tip. |

I have a question about combining data from different filters ( i.e. broadband filter and dual narrow band filter). How do you bring out the different colours from each of the images? I just copy one of the images as a new layer and play with the opacity. However this means that each of the images will lose some data. Should I flatten the combined image and continue processing with curves and saturation? Thanks |

APP or Astro Pixel Processor is what I use to process and combine the data. Once I do that all the other post processing is in StarNet & Topaz DeNoise and all the layers are combine in Gimp. Its a powerful software once you get used to it. For my layers I use different modes like, Subtract, Screen and Normal modes. Dale |
