I don't have a Hyperstar yet, but this seems to be a popular solution to the problem: http://www.hotechusa.com/HyperStar-laser-collimator-s/71.htm David |

I use the Hotec colimator on mine. You can get the job done with it but it is a beast. This is the best solution i have tried, though... Good luck and please let me know if you find a better solution. Best. Tim |

Thanks for the reply Tim. I am aware of the Hotech, but I don't know if I want to invest another 500.00 dollars. |

David Redwine:thanks for your input David. But like I said before, I don't want to invest another 500.00 in this system. |

I used a hyperstar with my C8 scope and I was able to get perfect collimation with using a star. Following this method will hopefully help. Center a bright star in your field of view and defocus until you can see the rings. At this point, your camera should be taking continuous ~1-second exposures. Then, place your hand on one set of knobs on the hyperstar and look on your screen to see where the shadow is on the star. Based on this and some experimentation you will be able to tell which knobs need to be tightened/ loosened to have the desired effect. Hope this helps. Hunter |

Hunter's approach is similar to how I manage my collimation, similar to what one normally does but with the hyperstar screws, rather than with the secondary mirror. I have a full frame DSLR, so it can get difficult if the camera is slightly tilted to the plane--this means toward the edges things degrade, even though it is perfect in the centre. One note, be careful of anything in the light path, you can get uneven diffraction spikes which make your stars look lopsided, even if the collimation is good. I see some evidence of that in your image, though could be seeing too. So for my DSLR I have a black foam cutout that is elliptical to mask my DSLR's odd shape. Also I curve any cables cutting across the corrector. Still get lots of spikes, but at least they don't distort the stars too much. And I would wait for a reasonably good night for seeing, bad seeing is going to make this very difficult to adjust. Good luck. Rick |

Hi Mike, Gary Imm has published a nice report about the collimation of EdgeHD Scopes with a Hotech Laser Collimator: https://www.astrobin.com/89yfcp/E/?image_list_page=2&nc=&nce= And I wrote something about it here: https://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/Bilder/shop/hotechlaser/Bericht-HyperSterHoTechKollimator.pdf( unfortunately only in German, so please use the google translator... ) CS Andreas |

Thanks for sharing this Andreas. Sorry for the late reply. I will study both instructions carefully! Clear skies! |
