The massive Creek Fire in the Sierra Mountains is 0% controlled and about a mile from the observatory. Wish us good luck, looks like we will need it.

We are just below Auberry road. Everyone is out and safe so it's just the equipment. Pretty sure Sam got the observatory dogs too!

SRO is a sponsor of AstroBin and a very fine hosting facility. I'm relieved that everyone is safe, and I hope that the fires will spare the observatory. Good luck and please keep us up to date!

Google shows the observatory now being within the fire, however, the live cameras are still operating and the site is still intact. Here’s a link to the live views:

Hi Kevin, I checked the cameras several times this morning, I too am on the edge of my seat wishing you and SRO the best of luck and a favorable outcome!!!
I notice a fire truck on camera 1-8, that is very good! Dave

Keeping my fingers crossed that the wind cooperates, Kevin. Just saw a fire truck arrived at the facility about 8:30a. Good news that the road is still passable and that there is a fire crew there to wet things down. Gary

So the ISP went down this morning but a sat link into the camera shows the site is intact at this time. A local report said the orchard that is part of observatory site was scorched, but only on the far side. Otherwise it sounds like the surrounding area is pretty bad. There are a number of homes in the vicinity so that is bad news.

The one camera is still showing things OK at the site. It must just be an island in the burn area because every burn map I see shows the area to be in the worst of it. Mostly concerned for all of he surrounding area now since the fire is 0% contained.

I'm hoping that all is still well there after the danger has completely passed. The west coast mountains are such a beautiful place.
Be safe everyone.

It appears we may be safe. Internet is being restored now, though intermittent, and the fire containment has begun. Good news for now!

My bags and scope cleaning supplies are packed, and I'm ready to make the pilgrimage up there to check on my beloved children, I mean scopes, just as soon as we can access the site; but I hear it may be weeks. Lte's hope our optics and equipment weren't damaged too much by the smoke and ash. I'm not looking forward to seeing the surrounding devastation though. Probably see you up there Kevin.
-Jeff
P.S. Don't let my actual children see this post. They get jealous .

I was planning a trip for the end of the month to reconfigure the L-350. Maybe we should coordinate timing and I can learn some more from you!
