Hello there,

I was wondering whether it is common practice to use the revision function to update an image when new subs were recorded? From the description this function is intended for improved post-processing, but I don't see a lot of work-in-progress uploads. Do people delete old uploads when they have acquired more subs, or post a new revision and edit the acquisition details? Or is the latter a no-go, as meta-data wouldn't match the old revisions? Or are people just patient enough to only ever upload something when they do not intend to ever acquire more data of the target?

Thanks a lot :-)

Interesting question! My original categorization was:
  • New data? New image.
  • New processing of the same data? New revision.

I didn't think about adding more data to an old image, but I think it's a matter of how much the new data changes the image. If it's minor, it's a new revision plus editing the acquisition details.

If it's really major (like 5 hours to 20 hours?) it's probably a new image now.

It's a bit of a Ship of Theseus paradox situation, isn't it?

Dear Salvatore,

thanks a lot for the reply. I did it that way for my M33 progress. However, it became annoying to type all the acquisition information again each time. That's what got me thinking about this topic. What would be nice to keep things clean with lesser effort, is to have a "copy acquisition information from another image" function, so I can copy everything over and just add the new acquisition data. Would that be a good idea?

Definitely a good idea, it's already on my list! That part needs to be improved because it's not very UX-friendly...

Dear Salvatore,

One more thing I notice, is that the total integration time measure in my profile is messed up if I upload multiple instances of the same data. But I wouldn't know how to fix this. Maybe even a split into "post-processing revision" and "new-data revision" might make sense? So when you start a new revision it asks you "Did you acquire new data for this revision?" That might be nice to keep things clean.

Kind regards,
Max

Maybe it would be easier to add a flag to image uploads 'Do not count integration data against total'.

Does it make sense?

Yes, that would also work :-)
