These days I've been thinking what humanity is striving for now. What is our goal?
And then I thought that if I had been asked to name humanity's greatest achievement I would have lost my mind between two things:

International Space Station and Large Hadron Collider. So...

I go for mathmatics. Further use of mathmatics by physics changed our understanding of this world dramatically.

That easy. Steam power (includes other petroleum power) and digital (more than the prited text) Those have had more influence on social change. More than religion, war or medicine .

No space exploration can match. The influence of digital on space exploration is trimendos.  The words I type wouldn't be possible without it. No space hardware is as large a factor as the computers that control it. Without digital, none of this would ever have happened.

I think that OP meant "what is the highest technological achievement of the human race", rather than "what invention had the most impact".

So while fire, or the invention of agriculture, or printed press, etc, had probably the highest impact, they're not exactly rocket science.

Personally, I'd go with something medical, like the mapping of the human genome.

The measure is IMPACT on Human Race world wide.  It has been greatly documented and researched.  Steam power relived production of  man power.  Sorry guys, Steam power is it.  It has been well documented that the largest total effect on civilization since recorded time, has been steam power.  Larger than the printing press, wars and even religion.  From steam power (includes petroleum power) came the industrial age and modern life as we Know it.  It can be documented that human behavior world wide was more effected/changed after Steam Power was introduced.   And here is the kicker, Digital is predicted to be next.

These are not my personal thoughts.  This opinion comes from expert sociologist. There is more likely debate, but is seems to be the consensus.

New research abilities now can include environmental/climate change into the mix.  It has been predicted that a volcano in Alaska lead to the downfall of the Egyptian empire.  The dust plum was so large that it decreased the monsoon in Africa and reduce the flow of the Nile.  That let to southern immigration in Africa and wars.  Which eventually lead to the downfall of Egypt.  Also the end of Roam and many bronze age civilizations is now claimed to be the result of climatic change.  The Ice age was big one, but before recorded history.  Of course I guess we could include pre-human and say the fall/death of the dinosaur.

I will leave at that and get back to AstroPhotography.

Which is your most important organ? Who is the most important person on board a ship? Which part on the car is the most important?

There is no answer to such questions because systems only work when several parts interact or build on each other.

Folks,

These days I'm struggling with humanity.

Egoism, war, dealing with covid, climate change, obviously self improvement......... Everybody is crying about but humanity acts like hundreds of years ago???!!!

Searching for extraterrestrial intelligence? Better searching for terrestrial intelligence.

Merry Christmas

It is not the 'greatest' invention, but most and fastest progress has been made in weapon technology -- ever since.
Maybe naive, but let's hope this will change sometime soon.

All the very best for the Holiday season!

Computer technology that allows us scientific research and global communication.
In particular, Voyager 2 & Co. and the Human Genome Project should be emphasized here.

Looking inward - the breaking of the genetic code.  Almost every therapeutic discovery in bioresearch since the 1970's uses it or springs from it (including rapid genomic sequencing, mRNA based vaccines, precise knowledge of the function of any of the 35k genes via knock in/knock out studies; pleuripotency among genes and protein/protein interaction).  Its akin to the creation of the internet, use of electricity, and some of the other massive discoveries that fuel entire sets of sub-disciplines.

I wish that we could come so far in other areas eg, controlling carbon emissions, managing carbon - so that my grandchildren (and theirs) might have as much fun as I currently have.
