Hello astrobin!

I finally decided to write a couple of words about myself. At daytime (but also often at nighttime) I am a PHD candidate in X-ray astronomy, so I'm doing research mostly related to black holes, some in our own galaxy, and some much bigger and further away. Although the observations of these objects are performed by X-ray telescopes in space, all my work takes place at the Dr. Karl Remeis observatory in Bamberg, which is the astronomical institute of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg. The institute is situated in an old observatory with two domes where in the past telescopes were located which were used for actual research. These days this isn't possible anymore, but it enabled the unversity to put some modern telescopes there which we can use for education and public outreach. One of these telescopes is a nice PlaneWave CDK20.

In this way I was first exposed to astrophotography, and it really hit me. After taking a couple of images with the big scope in a rather rudimentary way I started working on the image acquisition procedure and I improved it up to the point where we can now finally go to sleep while the scope is imaging away.

It didn't take long until I and my girlfriend started accumulating private gear on our own. We now own an 8" Newtonian and a very nice 86mm quadruplet APO, both of which ride on an EQ6-R Pro. For cameras we up to this point used an ASI1600MM Pro, but soon I will get an ASI2600MM Pro. Apart from that we also have a StarAdventurer at our disposal which we can use with a modified Canon EOS70D and 6D and several lenses. The EOS 6D also works great on the 86mm APO.

Suffice to say that now my entire life is dominated by astronomy and it seems as if it is going to stay this way at least over the next couple of years!

Clear skies,
Philipp

Hi Rüdiger!
Apparently you are from Ansbach or its surroundings. I must say, the skies in Bamberg aren't perfect, but I still think it's not a total catastrophy. Especially as soon as the churches switch of their spotlights after midnight
I guess in your place it's still better though
