Being involved in astrophotography for about 20 years and having a website ever since, I finally decided to share (some of) my work on Astrobin and meet other astrophotographers on this platform. Thanks to the appearance of comet Hale-Bopp I started as a visual astronomer in 1997. Two years later I inherited an Olympus OM-1 SLR from my late grandfather and my (astro)photographic journey began. Having used analogue medium format cameras and digital (cooled) CCD-cameras through the years, I've settled with a fullframe DSLR and standalone autoguider. I like to pursue astrophotography without a computer in the field; no risk of losing clear hours due to computer glitches. When the camera and telescope are set up, I like to gaze the stars through binoculars, a small second scope or - in case of a starparty gathering - a large Dobonian of fellow astronomer. Hi Maurice, you may remember that we met once or twice at the local dark site, a car park in the dunes near Wassenaar, along with several other astronomers. On one of those occasions we were all looking for a near-Earth asteroid, and did eventually find it! I was there with my wife and a 12" Meade LX200, which was of course quite big to move around ;-) Now, after retirement, I've moved to a much darker site in southern France, with a permanent observatory, and am really living the good life ;-))) cheers, Richard |

Hi Richard, Yes, I do remember we met several times at the ‘Wassenaarse Slag’. I have a record in my logbook of 13 April 2001. We witnessed the Northern Lights. Hi Maurice, yes I remember the aurora -- your picture captures how I remember it, and indeed, those were the days of film! I still have an Olympus OM-2 and that same lens, by the way (I tried to get hold of my late father's old OM-1 but my brother has it ;-). I'd forgotten, Huguette and I weren't married then.
