A Celebration of Mankind in Space As many of you know Saturday and Sunday, July 20th & 21st will be the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11’s landing on the Moon. I think this is the right time, not for a challenge, but for a suggestion. The world is now involved in Space and it all started over 60 years ago. My suggestion is that we post as many images of the Moon over the next 10 days to Celebrate, not only the Apollo 11 mission, but what came before and what has come after and what is today. The Moon will be out for the next 10 days for sure, spoiling most of your sky for that DSO you wanted. My philosophy is:” When the Moon is out, Shoot the Moon”. Who can post an image with 1 or 2 of the landing sites? Who can post an image of all six landing sites? I am not celebrating this because I am an American; I am celebrating this because I am a member of the Human Race! Join with me in imaging the Moon and posting with part of the title as Celebration, or Apollo, or whatever you want. We, the astrophotographers, have thousands of cameras and telescopes pointed up every night. How about imaging the Moon because it is there. If you have cloudy nights I bet you have data on your hard drive that could be processed again and posted, it doesn’t matter. I look forward to seeing all your images over the next 10 days. | Awesome suggestion and great post! Unfortunately we have a tropical storm forming in the Gulf which will likely send some clouds and rain our way this weekend but I am going to do my best to get some good images of the moon! |

Have you guys seen the new Apollo 11 doc? It's absolutely AMAZING! For someone who wasn't alive at the time, the High Def footage does an excellent job of portraying the emotion, pride, and determination of the nation during the late 60s. It's hard to explain but for me it made the whole event palpable for me. It also showed the tremendous enormity of the program. -JMB |

John Michael Bellisario: The 60s here in the USA was hard, three assassinations, riots and demonstrations everywhere. In 1968 at the age of 14 I was scared. The two event that really brought us back together was (a) Apollo 8, December 1968, the first time man orbited the Moon, 10 laps around the Moon then back home. Someone sent Frank Borman a telegraph that said "You saved 1968." (b) And of course the second big event was July 20th and 21st 1969 with Apollo 11 landing for the first time (with only 20 seconds of fuel left before the Auto Abort system kicked them back into space). Exciting times. |

Great idea, Van. I was a senior in high school and remember sitting in our basement (where our family kept the TV) for hours watching every second of the coverage. You know, I think I still have the original news paper headline of the event. I'll try to find it. Gary |

| I haven't looked up the specs for the computers (they had one for each task, no central computer) but I read once that a hand calculator like an outdated HP-22S had more computing power than the had on the Eagle. Did you ever see the movie Hidden Figures, that is where all the calculations were done, it is a shame it took almost 50 years to bring them out. |

Thanks Daniel and Michael, your work is just great. I too may have image the Moon for the last time this week as the weather is moving in and the 13th was my only chance. Also, Daniel, thanks for the tip on the landing sites. I have updated my last image with all six and will post it if I don't get another image before the 21st. |
