I use PI and DSS but I am not able to get a picture where the stars and the comet are properly stacked. I do have trailed stars and a proper comet. Can anybody give me some guidance how to get to both. Good stars and good comet?? I would very likely need a detailed instruction to follow. Thanks for any help in advance CS Rudi |

1st. Ditch DSS. Let's also assume you were tracking the stars rather than the comet. 2nd. Using PI calibrate the light frames assuming they are properly date-tagged 3rd. Once calibrated use StarAlignment to align them, using the first frame as reference 4th. Open CometAlignment and select all the preregistered file in the step above. Open the first in the series and click on the nucleus of the comet. Then do the same for the last. Insert a directory path for the aligned comet images in the appropriate tab. Run the process. 5th. Now, use ImageIntegration to integrate the comet images at the step above. Use a strong rejection threshold to get rid of stars if at all possible. 6th. Now save the master comet image and you can use the clone stamp to get rid of residual stars/star halos. 7th. Now, reopen Comet Alignment and repeat step 4 above except for running the process and selecting a different folder for the processed (comet-less) images to be produced. 8th. In the Subtract field insert the name of the master comet image file and use the appropriate operand (comet aligned). Press Apply. 9th. Stack-up the comet-less images produced in the step above. 10th. USe PixelMath to combine the two together to produce the final image. 11th. Season with your favourite flavours P.S.: How many brownie points do I get? |

I have no own experience with imaging comets but saved this video in case I'm ever going to try: How to comet stack in PixInsight! - YouTube I'll save this thread with Andrea's advice - and maybe further advise coming up - too. Good luck and clear skies Wolfgang |
