Description

This object is an interesting and diverse galaxy group located 200 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +44 degrees.

All of the 5 main galaxies seen in this image are just over 200 million light years away. The largest galaxy, the beautiful spiral NGC 2998, spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 140,000 light years. Our view is about 30 degrees from edge-on. I love the intricate structure of this magnitude 13 galaxy disk, with a solid yellow central region, fragmented blue arms, and numerous star clouds.

The edge-on galaxy to the upper left (NGC 3005) shows an interesting disturbed S-shape in the star stream arm extensions. The faint object to the lower left (PGC 28208) is also interesting and seems to be two or three small faint dwarf galaxies in close proximity to one another.
