Description

The Dumbbell Nebula, one we at the observatory often consider the "football nebula," is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula, a summer/fall constellation near Cygnus. The object is sizable, especially for a planetary nebula, and accompanied by protruding gasses commonly referred to as the "wings."

The image above is a collection of 17 hours and 20 minutes of data, taken right before our club finally detached the ancient STT-8300M from our Celestron EdgeHD 14" for replacement with the ASI6200MM. Expect first light with the ASI6200MM and the EdgeHD 14" sometime in the next two weeks. Thank you to @Tamas Kriska for aligning the channels and editing the image for me! I do not have access to PixInsight, so his willingness to edit the image is greatly appreciated.

Channel Assignment: Ha - red; OIII - blue; 0.1x Ha+0.9x OIII - green

Our star shall one day be just like this nebula. Think about that. This phenomenon reminds me of the quote that remains near the top of the Google results from the search, "astronomy quotes." The quote goes, "astronomy, as nothing else can do, teaches men humility." Correct, Arthur C. Clarke.
