Description

This object is a barred spiral galaxy located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Sculptor at a declination of -33 degrees. The galaxy spans 9 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

Our view of the galaxy structure is hindered by its 78 degree inclination angle, which is a shame because the structure looks very interesting. This is designated as a barred galaxy although is is difficult for me to see that here. An S-shaped yellowish inner disk region, including a bright core, contrasts with the blue diffuse outer arms. At the convergence between the two, faintly reddish areas indicate possible HII regions. The dark lanes are detailed and appear to be broken up throughout the disk. Sources indicate that the galaxy disk is warped. It is apparent to me that the disk is a bit distorted, but it doesn't look warped to me in this image.

The small galaxy at left is NGC 131. Distance estimates of it vary. Some estimates put it about the same distance away as NGC 134, which could be the cause of the disk distortion. Another possible culprit is the low surface brightness galaxy on the right, ESO 350-26.
