This was something of a test, to confirm my FOV and required exposure for the veil using a narrow band filter. In this case using my Optolong L-eNhance tri-narrow band filter to try and tease out the delicate structure of this supernova remnant from the bright background sky at this time of year.

I was amazed to catch so much detail, and very pleased with the focus, albeit somewhat lost due to the overall ‘thinness’ of the image, with only 60s exposures and total 30m integration (after throwing away about 30% of my frames due to passing cloud, guiding issues, or creaks in my ageing set up).

Nevertheless it gives me confidence that I can capture reasonable detail under bright summer skies, using narrow band. I will clearly need to increase exposure over multiple nights to achieve a good SNR, and take multiple fields to produce a reasonable mosaic of this stellar explosion.

Description: Another, the 'right' way up this time - comprising all 51 frames (60" subs). A bit of vignetting still so would like to try and resolve this, to remove any artefacts, but will need longer exposures and integration to really tease out the detail.

Description: Better flats (20,000 ADU) helped me draw out more detail in the data, with less background noise and gradients. I am slowly learning to improve these using an embroidery hoop with stretched T shirt and flat white wall. Somewhere between 20,000-25,000 ADU seems to work best with my Meade DSI III pro camera.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
