Description

This shot from our dark-sky trip to Big Bend in November focuses on the elliptical galaxy Messier 105 and its companions, NGC 3384 and 3389. M105 is 36.6 million light years away in the Leo constellation. It contains an active black hole in its nucleus that is 14 to 20 million times the mass of our sun. The galaxy to the right of M105 in this picture, NGC 3384, is a companion of M105 and is a similar distance from M105 as the Andromeda galaxy is from our Milky Way—about 1.5 million light years. NGC 3389 is a grand design spiral galaxy that is much farther away from us than M105.
